A California motorcycle accident recently took the life of Daniel Bogan, 57, who was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson east on SR-74 (Florida Avenue) where the road becomes the Idyllwild National Forest Highway.
As Bogan approached the intersection at Lincoln Avenue, a Toyota Corolla, driven by 22-year-old Raymond Barrajas, turned across the lane of traffic to enter a private driveway. Officers say the Harley hit the front fender and Bogan was tossed from his motorcycle. Bogan was licensed and wearing a helmet, but suffered deadly injuries at the scene. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the car-motorcycle accident. No word if Barrajas will face any charges.
Motorcycle accidents can be more dangerous than car accidents due to the greater possibility of sustaining a serious injury. Even if a rider is wearing protective gear, the brute force of impact with a car, truck or other physical object can lead to life-threatening injuries, as this tragedy shows.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
A survey by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that motorcycle fatalities in California declined by almost 25 percent during 2009, most likely because of mandatory helmet laws. Prior to 2009, motorcycle-related deaths were increasing an average of 10 percent every year, between 1997 and 2008.
Most victims of fatal injuries were young males who accounted for 38 percent of fatalities. Safety experts believe that this particular age group is at higher risk in traffic accidents, because of their tendencies to be reckless and not wear a helmet. Obviously, this man was older and was wearing is helmet, so that’s not a guarantee.
